Sleek, lightweight, powerful, and an absolute ton of fun – this 1956 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a custom build that will impress from the fit of the body to the shine of the motor
It all makes for a derailed roadster that you’ll love to dive.
This custom Volksrod announces it’s something special the moment it comes into view. Sure, bright red is always a bold way to make an entrance, but this one is also super-sleek. The metal body with fiberglass rear is an almost seamless design. The front end is uncluttered by a bumper or accessories, so it’s a unique mix of Ford Model A hot rod and a Porsche 356 Speedster. No door handles gratuitous trim keep the profile extra sleek, and the sunlight just seems to love to dance around the curves of the rear. The black and silver pinstriping package is pure custom car cool. Plus, you have 17-inch Budnik wheels, suicide doors, frenched tail lights, and an air scoop in the rear to remind you where the motor is.
The black roof really highlights the low windshield, and it gives this the profile like a Porsche Speedster. But as good as this looks in place, a roadster like this was meant to be open to the world. That way you can show off the custom red interior. You can tell this was thoughtfully laid out just by the details, like the how there’s a thin black stripe similar to the exterior in the doors, and there’s a cool silver and black racing stripe that not only goes over the driver’s seat, but also the steering wheel, roll bar, and rear seat. This is absolutely a driver’s machine with well-bolstered front bucket seats (the rear is probably best used for storage.) You also have race-ready features like the four-point harnesses and a comprehensive roll cage that strengthens the already sturdy Beetle pan. There’s also a sports steering wheel on an Ididit tilt column, a push-button start, and a custom-formed dash full of AutoMeter Pro-Comp gauges.
The motor is exactly what you want in a custom sports car like this. The engine bay has the kind of ultra tidy and bright style that tells you they know you’re going to be showing it off. And the hardy VW-based flat-four has been enlarged and upgraded. This is a 2443cc engine – something larger than ever offered by VW or Porsche. And it has a twin set of dual-barrel carbs, a Bergman 86mm full circle crankshaft, Cima 94mm pistons, Total Seal rings, FK10 camshaft, Bergman D-port heads, and an MSD 6AL ignition. Ceramic-coated headers let this exhale with added power and a terrific tune from the custom dual exhaust. The full package is estimated to produce 200 horsepower, and in a 1,300-lbs machine, that makes for impressive acceleration and fun. And you have complete control over this mighty motor thanks to the hardy four-speed manual transmission. You also have a fully independent suspension, adjustable coilovers, Mustang II steering box, grippy ZR-rated tires, and four-wheel disc brakes.
